None of us are immune to stress. No matter how chill we are, sometimes the fast-paced world just catches up with us and we feel like it’s too much.
As a mom of two, I feel overwhelmed on a daily basis, and sometimes it starts before we even get down the stairs for breakfast. Luckily, there are proven ways to cope with stress. But first, it is important to understand that stress is not always bad for us.
Stress is the body’s protective mechanism
Short-term stress may be beneficial for us. It motivates us to work on our tasks and improves efficiency, as well as makes our senses keen when we sense danger. It is a survival tool that we are lucky to have.
But often stress becomes a bad guy
That is because when we experience it too often, it can become hard for the body to re-uptake the stress hormones and neurotransmitters (such as cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine), and we don’t have the chance to calm down before the stress response is activated once again. This chronic stress overtime produces side effects and leads to disease, so it is essential that we learn how to cope with stress.
Here are a few things you could do right when you feel anxious, angry or just overwhelmed:
15 Things To Do When You Are Stressed
- Just breathe.
- Go out for a walk, run or a bike ride.
- Do squats, jumping jacks or lift weights.
- Draw, paint or colour.
- Write in a journal.
- Do yoga.

- Drink (pleasantly) hot tea.
