New Year, New You.
Some people make an extensive list of New Year’s resolutions first thing they wake up in the new year, some make those resolutions even before the year starts – they already need a plan for that magical first morning of the year, and others don’t make the resolutions at all as they do not believe in them. They say you don’t need a reason to start something great and you especially don’t have to wait to start it. While the latter group is right, it also seems absolutely right to start anew in the new year. There is something magical about it. You cannot start any fresher than on the fresh first morning of the new year.
Starting new year’s resolutions may pose a few problems, however. When encountered, they set people back and soon there’s nothing left of those resolutions except disappointment and a sense of failure. But what are these problems and how to avoid them? If you want to know, read on.
Problem No. 1 – Your goals are not specific enough.
Oftentimes, when we set goals, we have a general idea of what we want, a desire of something big and indefinite without the tools to reach it (E.g. I want to lose weight, I want to be healthy, I want to have more money, etc.). While it is good to have this idea, it is, unfortunately, useless without measurable aims and means to achieve them. To fulfil your desire, to make your dream come true, it is extremely important to break it into building blocks – clear goals that are realistic and uncomplicated.
So instead of just wishing to lose weight or be healthy, set specific goals which will let you achieve the big goal. The more specific your goal is, the easier it is to adhere to. If your smaller goal is to exercise, make it a goal to exercise for 20 minutes every day. Be precise and specify every detail. The better you know what to do, the better you do it.
Problem No. 2 – You don’t write it down.
It is not official until it’s on paper. Similarly enough, it is not a goal until it is written down. Before that it is merely an idea. Ideas get lost and forgotten in the debris of our tireless minds. You need to help your ideas to transform into goals and plans, to become achievable, so help it by writing it down and maybe eve sticking it in a visible place, such as your desk or your fridge, so that you see it often enough.
Problem No. 3 – You wait, you start, you fail, you stop.
While the problem no.1 is what most often sets you for failure, there are many more reasons, unique and not-so-unique. But there is one common reason and it is buried deep inside our psychological nature.
To start something big we wait for the perfect moment. It is only natural to associate the beginning of the new year with such a moment. So we make our resolutions, we start out fresh, and then something happens – we fall out of the routine and the most perfect moment to restart is already gone. We get disappointed, discouraged, we feel that we failed and we think: another time. Another time might happen in a year, or might not ever.
But the thing is – you don’t have to quit. One missed step is not the end of the world. A series of missed steps is not the end. And it is never too late to get back on track. Before the start of the next year, there will be many new months, before the start of a new month, there will be many new weeks. And in a week there are new tomorrows. If you find it difficult to start out of nowhere, use these cycles to start anew. Today’s failure does not defy your tomorrow.
Now that we realised our top 3 mistakes (which we may have already made in the beginning of 2017), we can start anew and try our best avoiding these mistakes.
